If you are looking to import pictures from your digital camera and you are a Linux user, then you should probably apt-get gphoto2. You know how easy it was to configure? I started an interesting little project the other day. It was based off of me trying to make sure that the computer parts that Tom gave me were functional. He gave me a tower with a motherboard, cpu, and power supply. He also gave me a cd-rom, but I had no IDE cable to plug into the motherboard. If I would have had an IDE cable I would have ran Ubuntu live-cd. So, instead I decided to put Puppy Linux on my thumb drive and boot the computer in Linux off of a USB. It took me a little bit to get it down to an exact science, mainly because the Puppy Linux version 3.00 Seamonkey doesn’t work with my laptop. But, I worked my way around it and followed this guide.  If you have an extra USB drive to spare and you want to attempt it go there and try it out. Now, I have a portable OS that saves information directly to the USB. Very neat and very fun.

Very cool! Puppy Linux is a bare bone type of Linux distro when Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Fedora just won’t work due to hardware restrictions. Puppy 3.00 recently was added and distributed on 10/2/2007. 3.00 is a slackware 12 compatible distribution that has a retro kernel version (2.6.18.1) in addition to the latest 2.6.21.7 Linux kernel. 3.00’s ISO sits at a 97mb download where as the bare bone version of Puppy comes to a grand total of an astounding 45mb ISO. Excellent for placing on a thumb drive!

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Beta. A lot of cool sounding features will be coming with this version. It comes with compiz pre-loaded on it. Mozilla Firefox plugins pre-installed and now I guess managing hardware will be even easier to handle. Which is exciting because that could mean that I won’t need to use Rutilt any longer for my wi-fi card. Dynamic screen config and also a graphical config tool for X! That means easy clicking to change resolution! Power consumption is supposed to be greatly lowered, but I’m not sure of the validity of that. Oh yeah, almost forgot NTFS-3G writing comes pre-installed. So now for people using Ubuntu Windows partitions on the same computer, easy file transferring between your partitions and hard drives can occur . NTFS-3G already existed, but now it just comes pre-installed. Exciting! Go Ubuntu!
